hand-sewn hexagon coasters

Supplies:  Scraps of cotton quilting fabric, thread, cardstock or plastic for templates (they also sell these ready made) and batting.

To Make:
For each coaster cut 14 fabric hexagons (I used 1.5" hexagons) and 14 smaller plastic or cardstock hexagon templates (I used 1"),  7 for each side.  Centering a smaller plastic template on the back side of a fabric hexagon, fold over the fabric and sew at each corner.  Repeat for each hexagon.
Make the hexagons into flowers (2 for each coaster).   Hand sew by placing 2 hexagons front to front and take very small stitches along one edge.  Start by sewing  the outside hexagons to the center one and then sew the edges of the outside ones together.   Remove the templates at this time.
Cut the batting to fit by first making a flower template - on cardstock trace around the sewn together hexagon flower.  Mark and draw lines 1/8" inside the traced flower shape.  Cut out the smaller shape.  Pin the cardstock to the batting and cut out the flower shape.  Sandwich the batting in between the two fabric flowers with the front side of the flowers facing out on both sides.  Pin in place.  Hand stitch around the outside edge.  Stitch around the center hexagon to help keep batting in place. Press with an iron.
